Trump facing probation interview before sentencing
Trump will conduct the interview via computer video conference from his residence at the Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida, sources told The Associated Press.
They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly disclose their plans.
One of Trump’s lawyers, Todd Blanch, will be present at the interview.
People convicted of crimes in New York typically meet with probation officers without their lawyers, but the judge in Trump’s case, Juan Murchan, said in a letter Friday that he would allow Blanche to be present.
The usual purpose of a pre-sentence probation interview is to prepare a report that will tell the judge more about the defendant and potentially help determine the proper punishment for the crime.
Such reports are usually prepared by a probation officer, social worker or psychologist working for the probation department, who interviews the accused and possibly that person’s family and friends, as well as people affected by the crime.
Presentence reports include the accused’s personal history, criminal record and sentencing recommendations.
It will also include information about employment and any obligations to help care for a family member.
It’s also a chance for the accused to say why they think they deserve a lighter sentence.
One payment of US$130,000 ($196,672) went to adult film actor Stormy Daniels, who claims he had sex with Trump, which he denies.
Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, says he is innocent of any wrongdoing and that the criminal case was filed to hurt his chances of regaining the White House.
Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheng said in a statement Sunday that President Joe Biden’s Democratic allies “continue to intensify their ongoing witch hunt by further abusing and abusing the power of their offices to interfere with the presidential elections”.
“President Trump and his legal team are already taking the necessary steps to challenge and defeat the Manhattan DA’s lawless case,” he said.
Murchan has scheduled Trump’s sentencing for July 11.
He has the discretion to impose a wide range of penalties, ranging from probation and community service to four years in prison.
