A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot by police outside Bunnings in Willetton after he stabbed a member of the public with a kitchen knife on Saturday night.
The boy is believed to have been radicalized online, Washington Premier Roger Cook said at a news conference on Sunday.
“The teenager made a triple 0 call at 10:10 p.m. and said he was ‘going to commit acts of violence,'” Washington police said.
“He did not provide his name or location and the phone call was then terminated.”
Shortly after, police received a second call from someone at the scene where they arrived to find a man in his 30s with stab wounds.
The teenager ran toward responding officers, one of whom discharged his firearm, killing the boy, Cook confirmed.
7NEWS understands the boy was part of an online support network focused on radicalization, and Cook said members of his own community reported his behavior to authorities.
“Members of WA’s Muslim community who were disturbed by his behavior contacted the police prior to the incident and I thank them for their assistance,” Cook said.
He called the incident “extremely confrontational.”
